History

By 1995, Carlos Ferrer had spent seventeen years as a leading investment banker to the healthcare industry at Credit Suisse First Boston. Over that time, Carlos had observed a gap in the capital markets in healthcare. He saw many successful venture capital firms dedicated to funding the startup and early stage capital for new enterprises.  There were also various generalist buyout firms who intermittently purchased larger healthcare companies.  In between the venture capitalists and buyout firms, there seemed to be a shortage of capital dedicated to provide growth and build-up capital. David Freeman, who had spent 12 years at JP Morgan investing in the healthcare industry, primarily in larger buyout transactions, saw that same gap. Having a shared view of the market, the two principals came together in late 1995 to form FFC with the express purpose of providing capital to healthcare companies in between the VC and buyout markets. FFC still invests today with that same purpose.

Now in its 14th year, FFC is investing out of our third institutional fund. FFC now has eight full time investment professionals with a combined 100 plus years of healthcare investing experience in addition to a network of industry contacts.

Although we have seen our market go through cycles since the firm’s founding, the central investment thesis remains the same. FFC believes its market is as exciting today as it was at the time of the firm’s formation and believes more firmly than ever that healthcare companies in need of growth or buildup capital are best served to partner with an experienced firm like FFC – a firm that understands the unique challenges and opportunities of a healthcare company in the growth stage of its development.”
